THE QUICK ANSWER

Check the seller, match the car to its documents, investigate its recorded history and arrange an independent inspection before paying. Resolve finance or identity questions first, keep a written receipt, and complete the appropriate ownership-transfer process.

Before you travel

Save the advert and ask for the registration, current mileage and unit, service information and seller’s details. Ask directly about finance, imports, collision repairs and any known faults. Answers in writing are easier to compare with the vehicle later.

Set a total budget that includes insurance, servicing, tyres and any immediate work. Arrange an independent inspection in advance, particularly if you do not have the experience to assess the car yourself.

At the viewing

Compare the registration and vehicle identification markings with the documents. Check that the person offering the car can explain their connection to it. Review invoices and service records for dates and consistent vehicle details.

Leave time to inspect in good light. Ask about warning lights, missing keys and equipment that does not work. A test drive should only take place with the necessary permission and insurance. Have a qualified mechanic assess issues you cannot confidently interpret.

Before paying a deposit or balance

Read the history report’s actual coverage and resolve alerts. Ask what any deposit secures and whether it is refundable; record the agreed terms. Do not let a “someone else is coming” deadline replace your checks.

Buying from a business and buying from a private individual have different consumer-protection implications. The CCPC explains the distinction and warns about traders presenting themselves as private sellers. Establish who the seller is before committing.

At the handover

Keep a written record of the agreed price, vehicle identifiers, odometer reading and unit, date, seller details and any specific promises. Retain the advert, report and payment evidence together.

Complete the appropriate ownership-transfer process. The handover is also the time to confirm keys, accessories and documents. Use our printable viewing checklist to keep your questions in one place.
