THE QUICK ANSWER
Use the official process appropriate to the sale and keep evidence of the handover. Ireland offers an online service for eligible private-to-private ownership transfers. The separate Vehicle Status Enquiry lets you check the status of a notified change; it is not a full history check.
Use the correct transfer route
The Department of Transport introduced an online change-of-ownership service for private non-trade owners transferring to another private owner. Start from the official service and follow its current eligibility and identity requirements.
Other sales or circumstances may require a different process. Do not assume instructions for a private sale also apply to a dealer transaction, an import or an unusual document situation.
Agree the handover details
Before paying, establish who is selling the car and how they are connected to it. Match the vehicle’s identifiers with the available documents. Resolve any finance or identity concern independently.
Write down the vehicle details, date, agreed price, odometer reading and unit, seller details and what documents and keys are included. Keep copies of the information relevant to your purchase.
Check notification status where appropriate
The government Vehicle Status Enquiry is described as a service for checking the status of ownership-change and destruction notifications. Use it for that administrative question.
A status message should not be stretched into a conclusion about the seller’s legal title, the car’s physical condition or whether a finance company has an interest. Investigate those separately before committing to the sale.
Keep a clear purchase record
Retain the advert, communications, receipt and payment evidence alongside the report and inspection. If the transfer does not appear to progress as expected, follow up through the official Department of Transport channels.
CarReport.ie cannot amend the register or process ownership changes. We link to the official services and explain how the checks fit into a purchase.
