THE QUICK ANSWER

Choose a history-report package that explicitly includes outstanding finance for the relevant countries. If an interest is recorded, stop the purchase and verify the position with the finance company. A seller’s promise or a payment screenshot is not confirmation that its interest has ended.

Ask about finance before arranging payment

Ask whether the vehicle is subject to hire purchase, PCP or another finance agreement. The CCPC explains that many car-finance products are hire purchase arrangements. Understanding the agreement matters when establishing who can sell the vehicle.

Record the seller’s answer and request supporting documents. A Vehicle Registration Certificate helps identify the registered owner, but you still need to investigate any finance interest rather than relying on that document alone.

Choose a report with the right coverage

“History check” does not automatically mean “finance check”. Some providers sell a less expensive history package and a separate or higher-tier product that includes finance. Read the package description before paying.

For an imported car, ask whether the check covers finance records in the previous country as well as Ireland. Also check the time of the search and whether a possible match is being reviewed. Pending, unavailable and no record found are different results.

What to do if a finance alert appears

Do not ignore an alert because the seller says the agreement has just been paid. Ask the provider what was matched, and contact the named finance company using independently verified contact details. Get confirmation of the settlement process and what evidence shows its interest has been released.

A settlement letter, a bank transfer and a refreshed database result can refer to different moments. Do not release money based on a sequence you do not understand. If you are unsure about title or your legal position, get professional advice before proceeding.

Read a clear result carefully

A report searches the records available to its provider at a particular time. It cannot prove that no other liability or error exists. Match the registration and vehicle identity, save the dated result, and read any exclusions.
