THE QUICK ANSWER

You can use official services for specific checks, including NCT validity, motor tax services and ownership-notification status. A free registration decoder only reads the plate format. It does not check finance, damage or a vehicle’s actual history.

Start with the question you need answered

A “free car check” can mean several different things. One tool might explain a number plate. Another might confirm an NCT expiry date. Neither result answers every question you should ask before buying.

Write down the uncertainty first: is the NCT current, does the seller have the right documents, or could finance still be attached? Choosing the right service for each question is more useful than collecting several reports that repeat the same basic information.

Use the official services directly

For NCT validity, start at NCTS. The Department of Transport also operates Check My Vehicle; review the information and terms shown there. Use Motor Tax Online for motor tax services.

The government’s Vehicle Status Enquiry has a particular purpose: checking a notified ownership change or destruction notification. Treat it as a transaction-status tool, rather than a full history report.

Know what a plate can tell you

Our Irish registration decoder explains the year, half-year where applicable, and county code encoded in a modern plate. It works in your browser. It does not connect to vehicle records, identify a make or model, or establish whether the registration exists.

Use a decoder to understand a plate you already have. Use official records and the car’s documents to check the vehicle itself.

When a paid report may help

Finance records, recorded insurance losses and mileage histories require different data sources. Before buying any report, read its coverage and limitations. Check whether the selected package covers both Ireland and a previous country of registration.

Paying for a report does not make the vehicle safe to buy. A useful decision combines the report, the seller’s evidence and an independent inspection. If any of those conflict, investigate before paying a deposit.
