THE QUICK ANSWER
A standard modern Irish plate contains a year prefix, a county code and a sequence number. From 2013, the final digit of the three-digit year prefix indicates the first or second half of the year. The format does not tell you the car’s condition or recorded history.
Read the three parts
Take 181-D-12345 as an example of a format, not a verified vehicle. “18” represents 2018, the “1” indicates January to June, “D” is Dublin and the last part is a sequence number.
For a pre-2013 example such as 08-C-1234, the two-digit year prefix represents 2008 and “C” represents Cork. That older year format does not encode a half-year.
The date relates to first registration
Revenue explains that the format applies to first registration in Ireland or another country. A vehicle first registered abroad in an earlier year can receive an Irish registration reflecting that earlier year when imported.
That means a year prefix alone cannot establish when the car arrived in Ireland. Ask for import information and examine records in the previous country if that matters to your decision.
County codes and older formats
Modern plates use county or historical local-area codes. Some codes changed with local-government changes, and older or special registrations have different formats. Our tool covers standard year-based registrations from 1987 onward; it does not attempt to decode every plate ever issued.
If your plate is outside the supported format, use the vehicle documents and official guidance. A tool rejecting a format is not a finding that the vehicle itself is invalid.
Try the decoder, then verify the car
Our free registration decoder reads these format elements locally. It never searches vehicle records and cannot confirm whether a plausible plate exists.
Use the result as an explanation, then move to the actual buying checks: documents, relevant history and physical condition. Registration-format knowledge is a useful starting point, not a substitute for those checks.
