THE QUICK ANSWER

Use official Department of Transport vehicle services and Motor Tax Online for motor tax information and transactions. Tax, ownership transfer, vehicle condition and recorded history are separate questions. A tax disc does not answer all of them.

Start with the official website

Motor Tax Online is the official destination for motor tax services. The Department of Transport also provides Check My Vehicle. Follow the instructions and information displayed on the relevant official service.

We do not reproduce government records or ask you for a motor tax PIN. Our research could not independently verify the individual fields returned by Check My Vehicle, so this guide does not promise a particular result from it.

Match information to the car you are viewing

Compare the registration on the vehicle, the disc and the documents. Check dates rather than assuming a disc displayed in the windscreen is current. If the paperwork and the seller’s explanation conflict, ask for clarification before proceeding.

A photo can help you record what you saw, but an image of a disc supplied in advance should not be your only evidence at a viewing.

Keep tax and other checks separate

Motor tax information does not establish that finance is settled, an odometer is accurate or repairs were carried out properly. Work through those questions using the relevant documents, history searches and inspection.

Likewise, an ownership-transfer status check has a particular administrative purpose. Choose the service for the task instead of treating every government result as a complete report about the car.

Allow for running costs

Ask about the vehicle’s applicable motor tax and confirm current information through the official service. When comparing cars, include insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance and any inspection findings.

A lower asking price can be offset by running costs you have not checked. Write down the assumptions so your comparison remains useful after the viewing.
